Muffins are easily one of the most delicious breakfast options – soft, chewy and crumbly, the perfect combination. However, with all of the added flour, sugars, and oils, muffins are easily one of the most unhealthy options to start off your day.
This banana oat chocolate chip muffin recipe is both healthy and convenient for those busy weekday mornings. I often find myself rushing out the door in the morning, which means quickly grabbing a pretty unhealthy breakfast to eat on my drive to work. These healthy muffins are ones the whole family will be itching for you to make more of! My husband and daughter are both decently picky eaters and they loved them.
What makes these banana oat muffins healthy?
- No flour, sugars, or oils are used. I wanted to keep this recipe simple and as healthy as possible for this family of mine. Using oats instead of flour makes these muffins gluten-free and makes the muffins more moist.
- Great for more protein in your diet. We incorporated a scoop of chocolate protein powder in ours, which makes it that much better for snacking if you didn’t want to eat them for breakfast.
- Honey is a natural sweetener. Skip the refined sugar in your recipes and use a little bit of honey instead!
Now, I know all of those “healthy” ingredients make this recipe sound like they will turn out to taste like rubber – don’t be alarmed. These are absolutely delicious. I can honestly tell you that if they are husband-approved AND kid-approved in this house, they must be pretty delicious.

Healthy Banana Oat Chocolate Chip Muffins
2 1/2 cups Rolled Oats
2 Bananas, ripe and mashed
3/4 cup Almond Milk
2 tsp Vanilla Extract
2 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Baking Soda
1 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 cup Honey (just for natural sweetening, I usually add it)
1/2 cup Chocolate Chips
1 scoop Chocolate Protein Powder
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Grease two 12-count muffin pans (this recipe usually makes about 16) and set aside.
- In a blender, combine all dry ingredients – oats, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and protein powder (optional). Pulse until all dry ingredients are a fine blend and transfer to a large bowl.
- In a separate bowl, peel and mash bananas until all the chunks turn into a slimy mixture.
- Stir in the banana mixture, eggs, almond milk, vanilla and honey to the dry ingredients. Add chocolate chips to the mixture and stir until evenly distributed.
- Spoon out mixture into your greased muffin pan. Bake in the oven for about 10-15 minutes.
